So after a good half hour of scanning everything in the cupboards & fridge, we finally settled on crackers & cheese & the lightsaber carrot for lunch, with a side of deli turkey. Then we caved in a watched what I considered a "Mommy show" and what Greg considered a "big boy show": Sabrina the Teenage Witch (one of the very safe ones where the message basically came down to "Don’t be a bigot").
Then it was back to no TV day, so here’s what we did:
-fought off Count Dooku with a clapper toy & a dust mop from under a blanket on the couch
-then Greg said "Let’s go to my room, but first let me dust you," so I got dusted
-I dusted him back and we sneezed about twenty times
-pretended to be doctors (because of the sneezing) and found out that stuffed animals don’t have heart beats
-practiced our roaring
-helped Nick carry things inside from his errands
-sniffed all the new tea
-played Monster (just Nick & Greg – I started typing this list instead)
-had a contest to see who was the best at throwing the foam pocket plane (verdict: neither of us)
-did a magic show with the pocket plane (now we can’t find it)
-played with the bubble wrap game on the iPhone
-sang the books of the Bible songs over and over again
And then the brothers came home & we started doing the after school stuff: talking about our days, planning the next few months on the calendar, putting away school stuff, putting away other stuff, etc.
Some days I wish I had a more focused blog, the kind that was chock full of advice about something, but I don’t have that kind of focus, anyway. However, today, you will get to hear about our rainy day activities, just because.
Since we’ve been sick for about a month, we’ve gotten used to having the TV on just about every hour we’re awake. Today was the day I said "ENOUGH ALREADY!" and unplugged it (literally, the screen portion is unplugged).
Things we did instead:
-I built towers out of blocks so Greg could knock them down
-Greg started building towers, then let me finish them so he could knock them down
-tried to learn to juggle (again, for the 15 millionth time)
-fed each other tortilla chip crumbs
-pretended we were tied down on a pirate ship and had to figure out how to get loose without falling off the ship (this is harder when the ship is invisible, but today it was the sofa)
-went through the whole house with a magnet to see what was metal and what wasn’t (with the attending screams of "NO, DON’T TOUCH THAT TO THE COMPUTER STUFF")
-talked Greg out of flushing Lego guys
-played hide-and-seek repetitively
-we threw a sticky frog at the tallest ceiling in the living room & tried to make it stick; it was too dirty, so we washed it and hope it’ll work later
-destroyed & attempted to rebuild Lego Star Wars thing without instructions(we crashed into it while chasing through the house)
-trimmed his hair in the front, but not the back because "that’s Nana’s job"
-test-smelled all seven kinds of lotion in the house before choosing one to get rid of the itchies after rolling on top of tortilla chip crumbs (which we also spilled while chasing through house) – his favorite: the cinnamon kind from holiday inn express– mmmm
-we took a picture of his half-wet-half-dry hair and uploaded it to facebook (his idea, not mine)
-then Greg discovered twitter and made his first tweet
-then we had a crazy jam session (first Greg on recorder & cymbals, me on tamborine, jingle bells, & shaker; then Greg on both tamborines & jingle bells attached to his legs, me on castanets, Christmas bell, & shaker between my toes; he shouts pause and then presses me to hold more and more instruments) / dancing jazz band parade
-(We also sorted laundry & stuff that came in from the van & looked for paperwork for the car registration, but none of that was fun)
And now it’s lunch time, so we’re going to go eat, otherwise I will collapse.
David is …well, fairly far behind in his cub scout work for this year. I apparently haven’t had him doing enough stuff, or enough of the right stuff while Nick was gone, so now he’s playing catch-up. So on Friday Nick took the big kids out and got them each a science kit (and a foam airplane for Greg so he wouldn’t feel left out).
David got a model kit to build the space shuttle. That part didn’t actually take very long, nor was it very hard to do. The hard part: instead of stickers for all the design stuff, they had teeny tiny tattoos that had to be cut out & applied with water. Needless to say, I found most of them on the floor this morning. Still, he designed a background for it to display against & it looks pretty cool.
Ben’s kit was more experimental. He got one about light. It contained around 25 items, including prisms, magnifying glasses, a small motor, lens making kit, reflective mylar, and instructions on how to make a box camera. It was really cool. We played with that all afternoon and parts of it came out during the rest of the weekend, too.
Greg has discovered the Paint app for the iPhone and he’s been making me lots of little pictures on it.
